Welcome, Teachers!
Why career planning for middle school students:
- Early adolescents are undergoing many changes at this stage in their lives, such as acquiring a self-concept, social skills and beginning to think more concretely. Also, they are starting to make decisions about their future.
- Kids this age are developing lasting attitudes about learning, work and other adult values.
Career Planning can assist students in middle school with:
- Developing social skills, personal values and self-esteem
- Recognizing their interests and abilities, and understanding adult roles
- Understanding the broad scope of work and career possibilities available to them
- Broadening their aspirations beyond the stereotypes of gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity
- Exploring how they can live and work successfully in a culturally diverse world
- Setting realistic goals and making plans for achieving them
Why Infuse Career planning lessons into existing curriculum?
- Lessons in career planning address and support many areas of the Vermont Framework of Standards/Vital Results
- Curriculum integration can introduce students to the world of work
- Students can participate in monitored work experiences, pre-apprenticeships, entrepreneurships, job shadowing, and community and neighborhood service. These experiences may help schools prevent students from dropping out
