Why career planning in high school?
- High school students are confronted by many complex challenges every day. It is a time when they are going through many dramatic developmental changes; career planning can help provide direction.
- In terms of career and education needs it’s all about preparation, preparation, preparation!
- Preparation is not limited to selecting an appropriate post-secondary institution or transitioning from part-time work into full-time work; the needs are broad and include areas such as values clarification, making responsible decisions, taking on the role of a consumer, and defining how to spend leisure time to name just a few.
Career Planning can assist students in High school to create a vision for their lives by considering all career possibilities. It can help with:
- Developing academic, physical, social and work skills that contribute to self-esteem.
- Learning how to get along with others and work as a team member.
- Identifying strengths, interests, values, preferences, and skills and how they fit with particular careers.
- Knowing the basic skills needed in the world of work.
- Increasing knowledge of different occupations and the concept of work roles and responsibilities.
- Finding career and labor market information in print and online.
- Becoming aware of educational, training and work-based learning opportunities.
- Trying job-shadowing, volunteering, and service learning experiences.
- Learning how to write a resume, interview for a job and conduct a job search.
- Planning for life after high school.
Why Infuse Career planning lessons into existing curriculum?
- Lessons in career planning address and support many areas of the Vermont Framework of Standards/Vital Results.
- Curriculum integration can introduce students to the world of work.
- Students can participate in monitored work experiences, pre-apprenticeships, entrepreneurships, job shadowing, and community and neighborhood service. These experiences may help schools prevent students from dropping out.
- Career planning content can contribute to improved student performance.
